Leopoldo López | Leopoldo López is a Venezuelan politician and democracy activist. He is currently the national coordinator of Redes Populares, a grassroots social-political organization that works with local leaders to develop public policies that address the key concerns of the Venezuelan people. From 2000 until 2008, López was the mayor of the Chacao Municipality of Caracas. During that time, he was the victim of several kidnapping and assassination attempts. In April 2008, López was among more than 300 candidates for public office barred from running for election by the state electoral tribunal on grounds of dubious legality. In October 2008, Lopez was named the third best mayor in the world by the World Mayor Project. He has consecutively won Transparency International's Award for the most transparent municipality in Venezuela (2007 and 2008) and in 2009, was awarded The Most Innovative People Award for Resiliency by Future Capitals.
